eSpyder is a custom built zero emissions electric car. The styling replicates the 1953 Porsche 550
Spyder by Erwin Komenda. Steve Heckeroth designed and built the propulsion systems used in the first
electric Spyders (1994). The frame is reinforced tubular steel and the body is fiberglass.

Vehicle of the Week
Car Fetish
Dan Lienert

At the recent Paris Motor Show, Venturi, an automaker based in Monaco, unveiled the version of its Fétish electric coupe that it will put into production next year. Venturi released a prototype of the Fétish at the 2002 Geneva International Motor Show.

The company plans to build only 25 copies of the Fétish, which will sell for $660,000 each. The car will be available in the U.S.

Tiny Venturi is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The sports car maker has raced in Formula 1 and at such famous events as France's 24 Hours of Le Mans. Venturi's race cars have beaten Porsche and Fiat's (nyse: FIA - news - people ) Ferrari subsidiary--both kings of racing--on several different occasions.

Venturi said in a statement that the Fétish will be the first electric sports car to go into production. A California-based company called AC Propulsion has an electric sports car prototype, the tzero (pronounced "tee-zero"), but it awaits production as the company finalizes engineering and seeks safety certification.

It's easy to see why the Fetish could become a fixation.

The Fétish offers a top speed of 105 mph, as well as the ability to go 217 miles on a single charge. Recharge the Fétish's empty battery for one minute, and you will be able to drive it for about one mile.

That 105 mph top speed might not seem that impressive; after all, you can drive an Altima sedan from Nissan Motor (nasdaq: NSANY - news - people ) at higher speeds. We imagine that the thrill of the Fétish will be similar to the thrill of driving a go-cart: Comparatively speaking, you're not going that fast, but the way the vehicle is set up, you feel like you are.

The Fétish's layout involves an engine mounted behind the passenger compartment, like that of a race car--a configuration that allows for weight distribution, handling and road-holding that are superior to those of front-engine cars. It also features a lightweight carbon chassis, which helps the Fétish weigh only 2,425 pounds. General Motors' (nyse: GM - news - people ) Chevrolet SSR hot rod, in comparison, weighs almost twice as much.

Leather interior? Of course.

Electric cars also feature a special performance advantage: Their peak torque is available the instant you step on the gas, whereas gasoline-powered internal combustion engines need to rev to a certain point before reaching their torque peaks. Not that the Fétish has a shortage of engine speed: It can reach 14,000 rpm, a rate usually reserved for motorcycles and Formula 1 cars.

The evolution of electric cars has reached a point that allows for a vehicle such as the Fétish to come about. Venturi said in a statement that before the advent of lithium-ion batteries, more than a ton of batteries would have been necessary to achieve the Fétish's power.

Forbes Fact

The Fétish's engine generates 241 hp, and the car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in under five seconds.

Feel Good! Over lunch I went to S.F. to see the ZENN (Zero Emissions, No Noise) by Feel Good Cars Inc. of Toronto (see attached photo). It's a Mini imported from France as a glider and Feel Good Cars adds the electrical components. It's a 25 mph, 35 mile, sealed Pb/acid, 2- seat, NEV. Plenty big enough for two big guys to sit in it, and it rides and handles quite well. For a
first- or secondff prototype, it is quite nice. The heating or cooling is done with a chemical device (slightly similar to a heat stick that when you break it it heats up). So heating and cooling requires no energy from the traction batteries. When the car is plugged into charge (120 V), the chemical reaction is reversed and next morning the heater/cooler is ready again. (I need to learn more about this device.) The feelgoodcars.com web site has nothing on the ZENN yet. Up until now, these guys converted Renault Dauphines.

1991 GMC 3/4Ton Van

I am selling this vehicle for a friend who recently purchased it from UMass, but has now tend current health issues, so he just doesen't have time to play with it.
This is a 1991 GMC 3/4 ton van, with only 8,465 original miles, it is rust free, in like new condition, and was last Inspected in MA in 1999, with 2 bucket seats in front, and one rear bench seat. The other original rear seats have been removed so two battery chargers that came with it could fit in the back for delivery.
Beautiful airbrushed cloud mural all around, that the picture does not do justice
This is an ALL ELECTRIC Vehicle built by The University of Massachusetts in Amherst MA. Apparently they started with a brand new vehicle, and spared no expense to reconstruct it with the most high tech, state of the art parts and technology of the day. It is an exacting, completely professional, extremely strong, well built system. It looks like who ever built it was trying to show off, or build it to show at shows, as well as versatility.
It has a huge battery array that I was unable to easily access to determine their number, or manufacturer, but there is a whole bunch of them. They are located under the floor of the van.
It has an independent gasoline powered heater system for defroster and heater.
It comes with 2 huge, 220 Volt metered battery chargers (one is an extra) made by Electro Networks, 1 Technology place, Caledonia NY, 14423. Part# LB1403-1 (?) EV-05 (?)
The belt driven power steering pump is under the hood, and powered by a small (approx) 12"X10" electric motor , is made by Peerless-Winsmith DVC, 1401 West Market St Warren OH 44485, RPM 2000, AMPS 7, SERIAL # SV44794, SHUNT (no horsepower rating) with its own independent voltage input regulator.
The huge (approx)18" X 12" main drive electric motor in the back is made by NELCO, Farnham Surry, GU9 9QS, England. Type-A, N200 ML012, SERIAL #513747, Supply 170 Volts. It is bolted directly to a heavy duty forward/reverse gear-drive transmission, with a flanged output for a short universaled drive shaft that goes to the rear axle. The rear axle pinion shaft points toward the back. I can only imagine how much it cost to manufacture that part. It is controlled by a huge rheostat connected to the "gas" pedal with a 24x18x18 inch voltage regulator to feed the drive motor, which is located where the gas engine would normally sit, and made by CLORIDE - Electro Networks. Electric Vehicle Central System, Part#27938006. Serial #1266, Type#911, Mark5.
It is now located in Shutesbury MA 01072, Near Amherst, and must be picked up, or It could be possibly delivered for an agreed upon fee based on time/date and destination distance.
There is a good title and everything looks to be all there intact. Because neither of us have a lot of information on the builders, background, or technicalities of this vehicle, and because it is not "drivable" due to the batteries not having a "current" charge, it will be sold "AS IS".
This vehicle must be must be picked up, or possibly delivered for an agreed upon fee based on time/date and destination distance.
As I said, not much more is known about this very rare machine, but in will try to answer as many questions as I can. Please call rather than email, 1-978-544-7442.
If you are seriously interested, please come to look at it...
Thanks, Bob E

1995 Geo Metro

California licensed ELECTRC, was purchased new by Graham & James, the prestigious
international law firm in downtown Los Angeles. The city gave them a "Good Earthkeeping Award" for their outstanding efforts to protect the environment. The 1995 Geo Metro 2 door coupe was driven by 35 employees trouble free for over a year and then returned to Battery Automated Technologies for fresh batteries. B.A.T. made modifications which necessitated removal of the back seat. Subsequently, Graham & James donated the car to the Red Cross
Make-A-Wish Foundation lot in Van Nuys, where I found it in January of 2000.

"ELECTRC" has 13,668 miles on the odometer. It is powered by a 144 volt Advanced D.C. motor and 24 - 12 volt sealed deep cycle batteries replaced in March '04. Easily reaches speeds of 65-70 mph, has a range of 35-45 miles on a charge, and plugs in to any 120 volt, 20 amp household outlet. Kenwood AM FM stereo radio and cassette player, heater and air conditioning all work. Car cover, spare tire, factory jack and lug wrench are
included. The car has been garaged most of the time and is very clean inside and out.

The car is located in Lancaster, CA and I am asking $22,000.

Thank you for your interest.

1977 Chevrolet Chevette, Conversion completed 02/07/94, 18 batteries (108vdc), manual transmission, Max speed: 70, Time to 30mph in seconds: 6.2, two pasengers

I bought this car in November of 2000 from Preston M. in san Refeal. I replaced the batteries and started driving the car to work daily in December and have used it as my main transportation since. I rebuilt the trans, clutch and installed new Michelin X tires in march. It has a Curtis 550 controller, RUSSCO EV heater, K&W BC-20 charger. I have installed another battery which has made a great improvement in the controller performance and the 0 to 50 mph time. but it isn't permanently installed yet. The cars range is app. 20 miles at freeway speeds with little or no drop in performance and 40 to 60 miles total depending on driving style. My commute is 32 miles round trip and I have made 2 trips per charge but I usually charge at both ends as the car is more fun to drive fully charged!!!. I am asking $4000.00, the car is not being used at this time and rather than see it sit I would consider any reasonable offer! I will consider any trades also.

Ford Fairmont, 126vdc, 20 batteries, max speed 60mph, 4 passenger. Other features/options: I bought his EV from Jeff Niles at the 1994 EEA Rally after riding in it and being impressed with its smoothness and quiet ride, and its reverse generation upon braking. I drove it to work in San Jose and Santa Clara where the company let me charge it for going home.

Improvements 1995-6: new tires, brakes, all batteries. The car is a medium size wagon, very powerful -- accelerated fast with a full load of heavy men.

The car has not been running since approximately 1997 because I burned out part of the motor brushes by too much reverse generation when coming down daily from 580' elevation in the hills where I live. I never got the time to work on it, and at my age I am finding it too difficult with all the heavy lifting, etc. Documentation from the previous owner refers the motor to Eric Dierof at Advanced DC Motors, Inc so replacement parts are probably available. I have been maintaining proper float charge on the batteries and topping off the water, hoping to eventually fix it, but now I have too many other unfinished projects.

Due to personal reasons I have to sell my Sparrow. It is yellow with chrome wheels and has a license plate that reads Tweetey. I got it the end of July and paid $17,196 for it. The vin # is 220 and it has just over 1000 miles on it. If interested, page me toll free on (877) 849-9428.

1987 Nissan Stanza Wagon chassis, 5 passengers. 5-spd, front WD, was so pleased w/ performance & layout after 240K miles, replaced worn engine w/ a used import. New clutch, front axles, tires, & more, but that motor only went 3K miles. A mini-minivan, lotsa deckroom for batteries, everything was working fine on it or I wouldn't have put so much faith/effort into it. A great converter here 4 somebody...best offer to a good home.

For Lease in the Bay Area

Not available anymore in the Bay Area

Rent a TH!NK City from Hertz

(or) Call Palo Alto Hertz (Charleston & El Camino Real) (650) 493-2009

These vehicles will be going back to Norway in 2003. Ford has sold the TH!NK Nortic group that was prepared to produce these vehicles for the American market. A Swiss company (KamKorp), has a letter of intent to purchase and if this goes through it might still be possible to purchase the vehicle for use here.

Frazer-Nash are based in Surrey, UK.

Frazer Nash is the major shareholder and flagship company of a former Singapore concern (now apparently Swiss-based) company called "KamKorp". http://www.frazer-nash.com

Sunnyvale Ford is the TH!NK Mobility dealer in the south Bay Area
